Ep. 288 Why I’ve Been MIA & Growing Your Business Profitably

Running a business isn’t just about more clients, more revenue, or even more growth. It’s about building something that truly works for you, your life, your family, your health, and your long-term vision.
In today’s post, I want to pull back the curtain on my own journey over the past couple of years, and share the intentional shifts I’ve been making in my business to build a stronger foundation, one that supports profitable, sustainable growth.

Why I’ve Been Quiet (On Purpose)
You may have noticed I’ve been quieter lately. My podcast took a brief pause, and I’ve slowed down my visible content over the last few months. But this wasn’t accidental. It was an intentional decision to step back and restructure my business.
For years, I’ve been running at full speed, helping health professionals turn their clinical work into scalable online programs and hybrid models. I love the work. I love my clients. And I love the mission of helping more practitioners find a better way to serve people without sacrificing their income or sanity.
But at some point, I realized that the speed at which I was growing didn’t give me space to build the deeper backend assets that a truly scalable business needs.
The truth is: fast growth can sometimes hide weak systems.
Growth Without Structure Can Trap You
When I first started my business back in 2011, I was like so many clinicians-turned entrepreneurs… I was dietitian who wanted to serve clients but also desired freedom, creativity, and flexibility. And I did find early success. I built a private practice as THE IBS dietitian, became a regular on national TV, spoke on stages, built courses, and worked with thousands of people.
But like many practitioners, I hit a ceiling.
Financial.
Time.
Capacity.
Energetically.
Even as my business grew, I started to feel trapped again trading hours for dollars, feeling boxed into a schedule I couldn’t control, and relying too heavily on my own one-to-one time to generate revenue.
And that’s when I rebuilt everything into one signature program that I scaled to help over 6,000 people.
This business has gone through a similar journey over the past 6 years where I got caught in the grind of launching, coaching and hiring/managing a team. My hours seemed to be full and my head full with stress and worry.
Even leveraged businesses can grow in ways that aren’t sustainable if you’re not careful.
If you just say yes to every opportunity, hire quickly, launch new offers without the right infrastructure, you can wake up one day and realize your business is running you.
Organic Growth vs. Intentional Growth
Here’s something most people don’t talk about enough:
Organic growth isn’t always good.
When your business grows organically meaning new clients keep finding you, word spreads, referrals increase, it can feel like everything’s working.
But behind the scenes, you may still be:
- Seeing 1:1 clients 4–5 days a week
- Working more hours than you’d like
- Feeling exhausted from both client work and managing a growing team
- Making less profit than you expect (despite higher revenue)
This is incredibly common, especially for health professionals who grow organically without stepping back to intentionally design their business model.
I like to call it the tomato plant problem.
A tomato plant left to grow wild sends shoots everywhere, some too close to the ground where fruit rots, some overcrowded with leaves blocking airflow, some too heavy to support the weight of the tomatoes. Without pruning, intentional guiding, and structure, the plant grows messy. The same thing happens to businesses.
The Power of Pausing to Build
What I’ve been doing this year is stepping back from constant outward growth and redirecting my energy toward intentional business building.
That means:
- Restructuring offers and product tiers
- Building backend assets that make sales more automated
- Refining lead magnets that attract the right people
- Creating nurture sequences that build trust and convert leads over time
- Simplifying my delivery models for better client experience and scalability
It’s work no one pays you for upfront — but it’s the work that allows your business to grow profitably long-term.
As I often say: You have to slow down to speed up.
Why Backend Systems Matter
In 2020, 2021, and 2022, my business grew quickly. 7X actually. We were bringing in high revenue, had a large team, and were serving many clients. But during that phase, I didn’t have much time to build the internal systems that create stability and sustainability.
- I was hiring fast.
- Training constantly.
- Juggling operations while delivering services.
- And frankly, working harder than I wanted to be.
Without strong backend systems, growth relies entirely on your energy and team bandwidth — which isn’t scalable forever.
The systems I’ve been building now include:
- Tiered product offers at multiple price points
- Automated email nurture and sales sequences
- Simplified client onboarding processes
- Technology integrations that reduce manual admin work
- Scalable content assets that serve multiple offers
These backend assets allow me to serve more people at scale, without working more hours or burning out my team.
Offering More Access Points for Clients
One of the biggest shifts I’ve made is developing multiple entry points for clients, so they can access my expertise at different levels based on where they’re at.
Here’s a peek at my product ladder now:

This allows me to help more practitioners, at different stages, in a way that fits their needs and budget, while still building recurring revenue and profitability into the business.
Profitability isn’t just about high-ticket offers. It’s about designing the right product suite that serves your audience while protecting your time and energy.
Health, Family, and Business Alignment
Another big reason I slowed down this year? My health.
After having my third child in my late 30’s, my body responded differently. I held onto weight that was easy to shed in past pregnancies. I felt more fatigued. And I simply didn’t feel good in my body.
Over the past year and a half, I’ve been intentionally prioritizing my health with:
- Personal training
- Nutrition support
- Hormonal testing
- Working with naturopath, dietitians and my MD
- Stress reduction and better sleep
And that personal work reminded me: Our business has to support our life, not the other way around.
Profitability isn’t just a financial metric. It’s about creating freedom, energy, and space to live your life fully.
The Hard Work Most People Avoid
Here’s the truth: Building backend systems is not sexy work.
It’s easier to keep marketing, selling, and delivering services. It feels productive to be busy. But long-term success requires building the foundation that allows your business to scale without you being the bottleneck.
Most practice owners don’t pause to do this work because:
- It requires patience
- It takes time away from immediate revenue
- It forces you to rethink your offers and delivery model
- It feels uncomfortable to “slow down”
But if you want a business that truly gives you freedom, flexibility, and profit — this is the work.

Final Thoughts: Build the Fort Before You Invite Guests
One of my favorite analogies is this:
You can’t invite people into your castle if you haven’t built it yet.
If you want to serve more clients, work fewer hours, and grow profitably, you have to take time to build the structure first.
Yes, it takes patience. Yes, it’s uncomfortable. But it’s the difference between constantly chasing growth… and finally building a business that grows for you.
