In today’s world, online programs and courses offer endless possibilities for sharing expertise, scaling income, and creating more freedom. But not all programs are created equal. Two distinct approaches—passive and leveraged income—can significantly impact your business, lifestyle, and client experience.

Let’s break these concepts down and explore how to decide which approach (or combination) works best for you.

The Passive Income Model

Passive income is the dream: you create something once and generate revenue with minimal ongoing effort. Think downloadable eBooks, self-paced courses, or toolkits. Once customers purchase these products, there’s no need for further interaction or delivery.

For example, when I was a digestive dietitian, I created a $19 eBook on nutrition. Buyers downloaded the resource, worked through it on their own, and the system ran itself.

The beauty of passive income lies in its hands-off nature, allowing you to:

  • Reach a broader audience.
  • Offer lower-priced products at higher volume.
  • Focus your time on other areas like marketing or new ventures.

However, passive income products typically involve lower price points. They require strong marketing and an audience large enough to sustain consistent sales.

The Leveraged Income Model

Leveraged income offers a middle ground between passive and hands-on services. Here, your expertise is packaged into programs that reduce repetitive tasks but still involve some level of interaction or customization.

Leveraged programs often include:

  • Pre-recorded videos and online resources.
  • Automated email sequences guiding clients through a process.
  • Live Q&A sessions, feedback calls, or community discussions.

This approach allows you to scale your business without trading endless hours for dollars. For instance, I run a program with live calls where I strategize directly with clients. These sessions are supported by automated content delivery systems that make the program highly efficient.

Which Model is Right for You?

Choosing between passive and leveraged income—or blending both—depends on your goals, strengths, and how you prefer to show up in your business. Consider these questions:

  1. What are your goals?
Do you want to earn an extra $20K a year, replace your full-time income, or scale to six figures? Passive products are great for generating steady income, while leveraged programs can command higher price points with fewer clients.
  2. What do you enjoy?
Do you love facilitating discussions or prefer a hands-off approach? Your passion for community-building or creating solo can guide the structure of your offerings.
  3. How do you market?
If you enjoy building a large online presence with tools like Instagram or TikTok, passive products can thrive with a volume-based strategy. For smaller audiences or private practices, a higher-ticket leveraged model may align better with your strengths.

A New Era of Creativity

The world of online programs isn’t one-size-fits-all. Gone are the days of cookie-cutter courses that simply upload a few videos. Today’s programs can be tailored to your lifestyle and goals, offering a blend of creativity, connection, and automation.

As you plan for the year ahead, ask yourself:

  • How can I use my expertise to create offerings that feel authentic to me?
  • Which delivery style will support my goals for time, money, and client impact?

You don’t have to choose just one. Building a portfolio of both passive and leveraged products can give you the flexibility to scale income, expand your reach, and serve your clients in innovative ways.
