The Story of the Fly: Are You Stuck Against the Glass?

Have you ever heard the story of the fly who desperately tries to push through a glass window, determined to reach the freedom it sees on the other side? It buzzes, rams into the glass repeatedly, exhausting itself to the point of collapse—never realizing that just behind it, an open door offers an effortless escape.

This is a powerful metaphor for how many of us approach our goals. We become so fixated on breaking through one perceived barrier that we fail to step back, pivot, and find an easier, more effective way forward.

And I get it—I’ve been that fly many times in my life. But one of my greatest lessons has been learning when to push through and when to turn around and take the open door. This realization is why I’m flipping my business upside down.

My Journey: Defying the Odds & Breaking Barriers

Years ago, when I was pursuing my dream of becoming a dietitian, I faced what seemed like an impenetrable glass wall. After earning my degree, I applied for the highly competitive internships required to become a registered dietitian. At the time, there were far fewer internship spots than there were graduates, and my grades weren’t stellar. I watched my peers get interview offers while my inbox remained empty.

When I sought guidance from my department advisor, her response was disheartening: “I have never seen anyone with your marks become a dietitian.”

Ouch.

I had a choice—accept that as my reality or challenge it. I chose the latter.

For two years, I worked tirelessly, building my experience through multiple jobs—at a prestigious children’s hospital, in community nutrition programs, and even in a hospital basement doing a job I absolutely hated. I put in the work, refusing to let my rejection define me. And when I reapplied? I got accepted—not just into an internship, but also into a competitive master’s program at the University of Toronto.

This experience taught me that limitations are often illusions—ones we can overcome with persistence, strategy, and the right approach.
